that doesn't sound like winning, but in total they sank around 3000 ships and for awhile destroyed more merchant ships than england could replace thus starting to starve england. that sounds like winning. churchill said his only fear/doubt about winning the war was from the u-boat peril. but the enigma codes eventually brought there downfall.

I read in a book, IM not sure which one it was but it talked about how cool Kretchmer was during a really tight spot. His cool helped the men stay calm that were freaking out. He would read a book to them as to appear real calm. The author said that when he looked again, he was holding the book upside down. It was all an act to keep the men calm. He was depth charged and forced to surface, and became a POW.

Maybe the book was the bible. Any way he spent most of the war in a POW camp.Why did he surrender?.
