@Melville10 yes they did in 1997 when it was at some piffling low price and they decided to sell off half of it!!!

@maclachj1 Yes, interesting because at least you learned something new, and whilst I'm happy to provide a public service to the great unwashed in educating you, it's not my job. Really 7 figures? I wasn't aware the job centre was handing out that kind of money. Either way, I suggest you go back to school, and enjoy my gift to you of a tax payer funded education, that you so sorely missed. Toodles :-)

@ContemptForYou ...this has been an interesting debate, but I think we'll have to agree to disagree. I'll to get back to earning my 7 figures while maybe you can think of ways to spend my hefty tax receipts and complain while you're doing it.

Eh? Your grasp of political history is shocking. Herbert Hoover? Calvin Coolidge? Ignorant much? These typically imbecilic conservatives festered the exact same mentality that you, and Thatcher inherited. The 'do-nothing' approach to economics. You agreed with me that NuLabour copied the British Conservative Party, nice of you to play catch up. Until the 1960s, the Tories were happy to act like adults in consensus politics, your political hero brought American free market idiocy here. Try again.

@ContemptForYou Dear Contempt for Everything...the greed and fear of the financial system was in full swing before Thatcher...cast your blinkered mind to the history books of the 1920's.....even you can't blame her on that. So we both agree New Lab was happy to ride the greed wave and piss all the money away in the good years. At last! Pleased you agree with my entirely missed point...good effort
ContemptForYou (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@maclachj1 The financial system in America, as well as Britain was allowed to rape and pillage. You might remember that was a nice present left to us by Thatcherite ideology, so happily co-opted by the Tories in the NuLabour project. Business knows best. You won't find a single Tory complaining prior to 2008 about the havoc wrought by our financial sector, or NuLabour's bending over to them. Because they'd have done exactly the same. Thanks for missing the point entirely, once again.
maclachj1 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@ContemptForYou oh dear....you really have been mis-informed haven't you. The financial system was allowed to rape and pillage and you may remember Gordons proud speech trumpeting the city prior to the shitstorm. No one complained when their assets inflated, including the govt...who happily hosed away the coffers. Tax receipts helped the public deficit, but none of this wealth was saved and how convenient it is to soley blame the financial system. Good spot but you missed the point
ContemptForYou (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@maclachj1 That's odd, because between the period of 1997 and 2007, NewLabour shrank the public deficit by around 7%. You must mean the irresponsible and reckless behaviour of the bankers that ran the world economy in to the ground, thereby forcing the government to spend billions bailing out the financial system, even after the wealth of our nation had been punctured by the said recession. Yes, that must be what you mean, because anything else would be irrational, ideologically driven drivel.
ContemptForYou (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@darkr0astedblend You must mean the data from the Commonwealth Fund, which found the NHS to be among the most efficient and high quality health services in the West. Because then you'd know that Daniel Hannan's idiotic comments were the mistake.
