Chris falling down on the knees is a reminiscene of Rembrandt's "Return of the Prodigal Son"

i was shocked about the ending. actually the movie came out much better than the book.

The book is definetely about a trial of contact and a misunderstanding. The planet destroyed so many people, and they haven't understood it at all. You should read the book (I don't know, if there is an English translation) - both movies aren't exacly showing her stroy and it's masterpiece.

Loved this simple, but effective twist ending. :-)

This was the best science fiction movie I watched so far.

Perhaps, but Tarkovsky made it his own. He is clear on the symbolism in his interviews but he had to get them past soviet censors. Many of his themes masquerade as sci-fi, sci-fantasy or myths but have Christian ideals at heart.

Lem's Solaris is a comment on the probable impossibility of meaningful communication with genuine aliens, it has nothing to do with God. That's a recent interpretation.

Wow. How profound. Guess you found me out. That is exactly what I wanted. MC Hammer. Or better still, Vanilla Ice! *sigh* Good lord, it's about aesthetics, you moron. Now this is what I find "utterly hilarious". That the concept of someone not finding every element of a scene, be it by Tarkovsky or not, aesthetically appealing being lost on you. Sure, I think it's a great film but would have preferred that the ending been scored differently. Got it now?

I find it utterly hilarious that you seem the feel that the music at the end was put there for your enjoyment; did it ever occur to you that the music was supposed to be awkward due to the scene? For fuck sake would you rather M.C. Hammer?
