Looks like this thread's dying out now, but any of you Malkmus freaks out there, trust atomlow's tuning advice. And stay outta NST, it's for bored virtuosos! At Least, the treble strings. Most Malkmus tunings take the bass down - try taking A down to G, and bass E down to C. Shoot the Singer uses that, as do many Pavement songs - that fragile, low fuzz sound. Want the middle sounding right? Drop the D and take G up to A. It's exactly right - Gold Soundz, Here (live '98-) etc. (CGDGBE) (DADABE).

His guitar is tuned like this: DGDGBE - watch his hands in the beginning so you know to keep your hand in the first position. You'll find the notes eventually, and he hits the open G (5th string) at the same time as the melody - it's a little more complicated than that, but that might get you started. I was a little confused when I tried to tune my guitar to the Fripp tuning showed below. In that tuning I had to move my hand out of the 1st position, which he doesn't do Thanks for posting this!
