If he didnt turn in, the accident would have been far less dramatic. Because he turned in, the car started rolling, and if he went straight into the tire wall, it may have hurt a bit more, but he would have had a greater chance for surviving it. Great news that he walked away, the accident looked horrific.

Brakes with ABS can fail without warning. All it takes is a dirty signal from the wheel sensor. Yes this car had ABS. As well a master cylinder could go bad as well with no evidence. A wheel bearing can take a crap and cause a brake failure. In Racing failures can happen without warning. rkj4107 maybe there are some things you don't know all about.

I hate to say it but this accident probably could have been prevented. There had to have been some telltale sign that should have shown up in one of the inspections. Brakes don't just fail out of nowhere. (wet spot on a line/ caliper, bubble on a line etc, even old fluid...) Glad he's ok though.

Couldnt belive he went through the tire barrier and the big fences and then another fence into the spectator area..
