The synthesizer isn't making the sound over his voice. With a talk box, it acts as a tiny little amplifier that uses the tube to send sound through it. The sound travels into the performers mouth and gets further modified by "saying" or mouthing the words as the sound comes into your mouth. With the sound acting as your vocal chords all you have to do is learn how to enunciate with the tube in your mouth to create clear sounding words looking as if you were the one actually singing that way.
