There is nothing cheesy about that performance. It was absolutely magnificant, as always from Jussi..

A little cheesy at the end, but very nice presentation up until then.

As far as his alcohol problem, so what he still sang wonderfully so why was it even brought up here by aguacun, many others did also but when i put on the records all i hear is a great sound not cocktails.

records are one thing and I heard him in 1958 in house the duke and it was not as large a sound as on records but beautiful, truth be told you can not make a Spinto out of a lyric Spinto or a dramatic out of a spinto and Corelli was a Spinto not a dramatic as his fans insist-- no way. He was the best live Calaf ever but on record JB is the best, better tech then Corelli ever had and a better singer but hard to compare a lyric to a spinto-- apples and oranges but tech. you can compare.

He would have NEVER sung it not true -read page 317 of the Andrew farkus book JUSSI about Turandot he was not stupid and he tells you --quote dick mohr "Jussi was not really a large voice If you heard him at the old met you'd be slightly disappointed You'd think "where is this huge voice? But it carried and he had marverlous projection he was a lyrico spinto" JB was not foolish enough to do it Nilsson of course was the best Turandot and on the recording JB is the best Calaf, live Corelli is.

I heard from someone that was in the production that he was slated to do Calaf at the Met in 60 or 61 with Birgit, basically recreating the cast on the fab recording, but unfortunately he passed on, and a young tenor named Franco "Something" filled in. Which in itself, was a miraculous production. Corelli and Nilsson tore it up on Turandot! Still would've loved to have heard Jussi sing it live, cuz his voice could cut through pretty much any orchestra without his having to push.

Oltre ad avere un timbro di voce unico nella sua bellezza Jussi canta da Lord...con eleganza estrema

No-- he never sang opera's he should not have sung he treated his voice very well, better then himself physically, yes he did drink. He never pushed singing roles he should not, No never sang Turandot on stage with his basic lyric voice and never pushed it singing Forza, Carmen or Boccenegra, roles he felt to dramatic for his voice and at the end the voice was still very fine at 49 years old when he died of heart disease.
