The sound kind of reminds me of the audio they use to simulate Terradactyls in movies like Jurrasic Park.
Like I said to OldMan, I think they didn't have seagull audio so they found whatever bird sound they could get their hands on that came close.

They're just normal seagulls.
I guess they didn't have any seagull sounds so they took whatever bird they had lieing around that sounded somewhat like the seagull.

I can't watch the English dubs now after listening to the Japanese audio for over 100 episodes.
It would just sound weird to me.
The series did have some dubs but they were awful - usually dub jobs are great (ex. Ranma 1/2 also by Takahashi) but UYs was really bad.
