tsunamimom: Please read the context of my first post. It was meant in jest and in no way serious at all. Have you had an humour bypass? Please read posts more thoroughly in future 'Slapped botties for answering back' Lol!

She wasn't a Scientologist at all. Joyce Grenfell was a Christian Scientist - a completely different religion.

A teaching colleague of mine played this to her class of eleven year olds. They loved it and identified all the cosy little cliches from their own experience (this was forty years ago). Although I have the same image as Clare, surely the question of what George was doing is left open and all the more funny for that? Why Joyce Grenfell being a scientologist is "trouble" only kabogga knows. The idea that Jesus was like an ordinary boy is widespread - google "The Bitter Withy" for a fine example.

greenfly5916: Joyce Grenfell died in 1979.
She was not only related to Nancy Astor, but to Winston Churchill as well. Apparently she could smoke a cigar quicker than him too.
Trouble is, because she was a scientologist she belived that christ was not the messiah but a very naughty boy... ;-)

i love joyce grenfell, i know a few of her sketches by heart. ive never heard this one before. I thought the only nursery school sketch she did was the story time one.

Famously, what George is doing is picking his nose... we imagine. Of ocurse, when Grenfell performed these on stage, they were monologues, so listening to it here is exactly the same in terms of clues.
Mary Astor - ? Wikipedia it KEJHuges.

Joyce was an aristocrat who started her career entertaining the troops in concert parties during the war. Probably best known for her appearances in the St. Trinians Films of the sixties. Sadly, Joyce died prematurely of cancer in 1976.

apparently she was an aristocratic American, related to Lady Astor whoever she is! I saw a bit of a documentary last night, unfortunately missed the whole story. I'd like to hear more. If anyone can put some more sketches up that would be great. |
