That's a nylon string guitar. Willie likes them too. They won't tear your fingers up and they have a very unique sound. Usually Classical or Flameco, but close enough for Country.

damn!! i just realised who this was tonight, loved smokey and the bandit as a kid, but only found, by chance, jerrys breakdown and realised how feckin good he was on guitar!! and that he's no longer with us. RIP Jerry!!

The banjo player is Fred Newell, who also played with Waylon Jennings and Barefoot Jerry at the time. In the mid-1970's Bela Fleck was probably still in high school in New York.
