Benjamin was way too nice with that first guy... If I were Ben, I would've told him to practice some more and come back when he's ready... It is ridiculous to go into masterclass unprepared like that.

Wow. You really thought that one out.

Masterclasses are generally not for learning technique. The students should know their piece from memory and should have their technique down before the masterclass. The masterclass is to put the polish on their piece by learning some musical ideas and perhaps losing some old ones. Ben's singing was a good teaching tool and a very good skill he has there, not easy to sing this material. My only criticism is in Ben's blues "tics". His humor is entertaining, reminds me of Robin Williams.

that first guy looks like he should be sittin at a bar watchin football, not playing classical guitar.
CaptainGarryRules (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
exactly. also you don't go to a master class to learn technique that you can learn pretty much anywhere.

the first guy is a huge douche bag. Its like he doesn't want to be there and doesn't care for the advice

why would you spend a 25 minute master-class addressing technical issues. When you have a short amount of time to teach someone you need to talk about something they can walk out of the class with. changing someone's technique will result in the person going back to their old ways the next day.

the last guy playing the fugue from the pfa has near flawless technique...and the guy playing cordoba was pretty good as well. i agree that verdery could have done more technique stuff before going into interpretation with some of these students, but i got a great deal out of the musical comments given on the first guy. ben has awesome ideas for the bach which i have incorporated into my playing. so i agree and disagree. |
