I think it has to do with the fact that people know that cows are bred and raised for human consumption, especially in westerm culture. In some places, the cow is sacred, but dog is fair game. So it has to do with culture I think. That and the fact that western culture is trying to realize that these animals are precious to our ecosystems, so that we don't have an over or underabundance of anything.

did u know if u become a member of the vancouver aquarium you can come in any time and look after the seal pups i did that last year, they were all just so cute.
